A Step-by-Step Preparation Guide
Proper nutritional preparation can significantly improve your surgical outcomes. This guide provides a practical, week-by-week approach to optimizing your nutrition before surgery.
4-6 Weeks Before Surgery
Establish Your Baseline
- Calculate your protein needs (1.2-1.5g per kg body weight)
- Track your current protein intake for 3 days
- Identify any nutritional gaps
- Consider getting blood work to check for deficiencies
Start Building Reserves
- Increase protein intake gradually
- Ensure adequate vitamin D levels
- Optimize iron stores if needed
- Maintain healthy body weight
2-4 Weeks Before Surgery
Optimize Protein Intake
This is the critical window for protein optimization. Aim to consume protein at every meal:
- Breakfast: 25-30g (eggs, Greek yogurt, protein shake)
- Lunch: 30-40g (chicken, fish, tofu, legumes)
- Dinner: 30-40g (lean meat, fish, plant proteins)
- Snacks: 10-15g (nuts, cheese, protein bars)
Focus on Micronutrients
- Vitamin C: Citrus fruits, berries, capsicum
- Zinc: Meat, shellfish, legumes, seeds
- Vitamin A: Carrots, sweet potato, leafy greens
- Omega-3s: Fatty fish, walnuts, flaxseed
1 Week Before Surgery
Maintain High Protein
Continue your optimized protein intake right up until your pre-surgery fasting period.
Stay Well Hydrated
Aim for 8-10 glasses of water daily. Good hydration supports all body functions and prepares you for surgery.
Avoid Alcohol
Stop alcohol consumption at least one week before surgery as it can interfere with healing and interact with anesthesia.
24-48 Hours Before Surgery
Follow Fasting Instructions
Your surgeon will provide specific fasting instructions. Typically this means:
- No solid food for 6-8 hours before surgery
- Clear fluids may be allowed up to 2 hours before
- Some surgeons recommend carbohydrate drinks up to 2 hours before
Your Last Meal
Make your final pre-surgery meal count:
- Include 30-40g of protein
- Choose easily digestible foods
- Avoid heavy, fatty, or spicy foods
- Stay well hydrated
Supplements and Medications
Always discuss supplements with your surgeon. Some may need to be stopped before surgery (like vitamin E, fish oil, or certain herbal supplements), while others may be beneficial (like vitamin D or iron if deficient).
Planning for After Surgery
Before your surgery, stock your kitchen with easy-to-prepare, protein-rich foods for your recovery period. Having these ready will make it easier to maintain good nutrition when you're recovering.
