Your Post-Surgery Nutrition Guide

What you eat after surgery directly impacts how quickly and completely you recover. This practical guide will help you make the right nutritional choices during each phase of your recovery.

The First 24-48 Hours

Immediately after surgery, your digestive system may be sensitive. Start with clear fluids and progress gradually as tolerated.

What to Focus On

  • Clear broths and soups
  • Water and electrolyte drinks
  • Herbal teas
  • Diluted fruit juices

Days 3-7: Building Back Up

As your appetite returns, begin introducing more substantial foods with a focus on protein and easily digestible options.

Protein-Rich Foods

  • Eggs (scrambled, poached, or soft-boiled)
  • Greek yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Tender chicken or fish
  • Protein shakes or supplements

Easy-to-Digest Carbohydrates

  • White rice or pasta
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Oatmeal
  • White bread or crackers

Weeks 2-6: Optimizing Recovery

This is the critical healing phase. Your nutritional needs are at their highest, particularly for protein.

Daily Nutrition Goals

  • Protein: 1.5-2g per kg body weight
  • Calories: Sufficient to support healing (don't restrict)
  • Hydration: 8-10 glasses of water daily
  • Vitamins and minerals: Focus on vitamin C, zinc, and iron

Foods to Limit or Avoid

  • Alcohol (interferes with healing)
  • Highly processed foods
  • Excessive sugar
  • Foods that cause digestive discomfort

When to Seek Help

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience persistent nausea, inability to keep food down, or significant unintended weight loss.
