Why Protein Matters Before Surgery

The Foundation of Surgical Recovery
When preparing for surgery, protein stands out as the single most critical nutrient for your body. While all nutrients play important roles, protein is uniquely essential for tissue repair, immune function, and maintaining muscle mass during the perioperative period.
Why Your Body Needs More Protein
Surgery creates a significant metabolic stress on your body. This stress increases your protein requirements by 50-100% compared to normal needs. Your body uses this extra protein to:
- Build and repair tissues damaged during surgery
- Produce antibodies and immune cells to fight infection
- Maintain muscle mass during periods of reduced activity
- Create enzymes and hormones needed for healing
The Pre-Surgery Protein Window
The 2-4 weeks before your surgery represent a critical window for protein optimization. During this time, adequate protein intake helps you build nutritional reserves that your body will draw upon during and after surgery.
How Much Protein Do You Need?
Most surgical patients should aim for 1.2-1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily in the weeks before surgery. For a 70kg person, this translates to approximately 84-105 grams of protein per day.
Quality Matters
Not all protein sources are equal. Complete proteins containing all essential amino acids—found in meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and specialized supplements—are most effective for supporting surgical recovery.
The Evidence
Research consistently shows that patients who optimize their protein intake before surgery experience better outcomes, including faster wound healing, reduced infection rates, shorter hospital stays, and better preservation of muscle mass.
